The Shippy Awards 2016: The Winners!

THE SHIPS HAVE FOUGHT. The ships have battled. Some ships have sunk, others have risen victoriously, cresting waves and zooming along tides and doing other improbably nautical things, since I am not a sailor. But only the most seaworthy ships have survived the journey. DID YOU FAVORITES MAKE IT TO THE END?

I hope so, or this will be very depressing. ANYWAY. Thank you to everyone who voted in the last round! An absolutely staggering number of you turned out to support your OTPs and NOTPs alike, and I'm so thrilled and also honored. I love that so many of you actually enjoy partaking in my funny little reindeer games. You truly are my reindeer! People! Whichever, let's have some eggnog and toast the winners.

The winning ships have earned one of THESE magnificent magnificents:

A SHIPPY! Why yes, that is a drawing of a trophy that does not exist. IT IS THE MOST COVETED MADE UP TROPHY IN THE UNIVERSE.

AND NOW, LET US ANNOUNCE THE WINNERS OF THIS GLORIOUS DRAWING OF A TROPHY THAT DOES NOT EXIST!

Ultimate Ship Honors

Best Ship of the Year

Feyre and Rhysand from A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas with 40.4% of the vote

Runners up: Kaz and Inej from Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo, with 22.2% of the vote

This was by far the most highly voted category, but as you can see, one ship rather ran away with the competition.

Shippiest Book

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas with 37.7% of the vote

Runner up: Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo with 37.2% of the vote

(Are you sensing a pattern/theme-ish thing? Get used to this pattern/theme-ish thing.)

Best Author of Ships

Leigh Bardugo with 36.3% of the vote

Runner up: Sarah J. Maas with 32% of the vote

AND THE PATTERN/THEME-ISH THING REVERSES! Still the same general pattern-ish pattern, though.

Best Debut Ship

Danny and Colton from Timekeeper by Tara Sim with 15% of the vote

Runner up: Lucy and Josh from The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

The closest of all the races! For perspective, third place (a tie between Henrietta and Blackwood from A Shadow Bright and Burning and Maya and Amar from The Star-Touched Queen) were tied at 13.9%. NECK AND NECK IN THE DEBUT RACE.

Best QUILTBAG+ Ship

Wylan and Jesper from Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo with 37.3% of the vote

Runners up: Adam and Ronan from The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater with 34.7%

Another VERY tight race, at least between the top two. They fairly decimated the rest of their competition, but the lead was exchanged multiple times.

What Makes a Ship

Hottest Hook Up

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas with 49%

Runner up: The Hating Game by Sally Thorne with 19.3%

Yeah, there really was no stopping the winner of this one. Feysand finishes strong.

snerk

Best Kiss

The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater with 29.7%

Runner up: Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo with 20.9%

It is a truth universally acknowledged that if two super cute boys make out, the shippy people of the interwebs are going to vote for it.

Tropes

Best “I Hate Your Face But Also I Want to Smash It Against Mine”

Lucy and Josh from The Hating Game by Sally Thorne with 31.2%

Runners up: Elide and Lorcan from Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas with 29.2%

Elide and Lorcan were leading for most of the race, but the Lucy/Josh lovers really came on strong at the end and there is no way for these things not to sound dirty

Best “Friends to Lovers”

Kaz and Inej from Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo with 34.4%

Runners Up: Ronan and Adam from The Raven King with 19.5%

Baes.

Best “JUST KISS ALREADY”

Kaz and Inej from Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo with 29.4%

Runners up: a THREE WAY TIE between Ronan/Adam and Blue/Gansey (you trolls) from The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater and Jesper and Wylan from Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo with 11.8 %.

LOOK KAZ AND INEJ HAVE VERY SOLID REASONS FOR WITHOLDING THE MASHING OF ZEE LIPS but also dear god my precious tortured babies love each other love each other

Genres

Best Fantasy Ship

Feyre and Rhysand from A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas with 40%

Runners up: Kaz and Inej from Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo with 38.3%

Another category with an ABSURD number of votes. This one was such a whirlwhind to watch, oh man. Feysand took an early lead--a HUGE one--but then Team Kaz/Inej came LEAPING up from behind to overtake them, but then in the late hours, Feysand just could not be beat.

Best Contemporary Ship

Andie and Clark from The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson with 21%

Runners up: Lily and Cade from P.S. I Like You by Kasie West with 19.4%

The tightest race after the razor-close debut BATTLE OF DEATH. Third place (Lucy and Josh from The Hating Game) had 18.3%, and really, all six categories had at least 11% of the vote.

Best Paranormal Ship

Ronan and Adam from The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater with 26.6%

Runners up: Blue and Gansey from The Raven King with 24.5%

Oo, this was a close one. The two Raven Ships battled it out for ultimate supremacy, trading leads and cutting each other off at the pass, but in the end, Ronan Lynch refuses to lose any kind of race.

Best Science Fiction Ship

Cress and Thorne from Stars Above by Marissa Meyer with 37.7%

Runners up: Cas and Swift from The Abyss Surrounds Us by Emily Skrutskie with 19% of the vote

Cress and Thorne barely even starred in a book this year, and yet such is the power of their love that they are the first repeat winners of a Shippy Award, having dominated last year's Best Sci Fi Ship category! Thorne expected no less, I am sure.

Fun With Ships

Most Un-Ship

We have an absolute dead tie down to the vote count for two SJM ships:

Dorian and Manon from Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas
Feyre and Tamlin from A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Mass
each with 32.8%

Runners up: Aelin and Rowan from Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas with 14.9%

WELL.

Best Crackship

Dorian and Chaol from Empire of Storms (kind of, sorry Chaol) with 31.2%

Runners up: Manon and Asterin from Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas with 18.1%

AND THE STUCKY OF YA CONTINUES ITS REIGN, netting the second repeat Shippy of tonight's broadcast! TBH, I consider both of these ships completely canon, so honestly, what are they doing in this category

Best Friendship

The Raven Gang from The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater with 25.2%

Runners up: Nina and Inej from Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo with 19.5%

*Gathers all my beautiful friendships in a big beautiful squishy hug*

Best Adaptation Ship

Bellamy and Clarke from The 100 with 48.5%

Runners up: Claire and Jamie from Outlander with 32.4%

And everything is right in the world.

THANKS FOR TUNING IN, my lovely shippy people! I'm sorry if your faves lost, but they are still good ships, Brent, and just for the hell of it I'm giving all of THEM made up trophies too! Only the winners get the full bragging rights, though, and a special PLAQUE on their SPECIAL (DRAWINGS OF) TROPHIES

Ship long and prosper *hugs for all*
